Tuesdays 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM Sangster Cafeteria The Chess Club is sponsored by the Sangster PTA. The club is open to students of all skill levels from 2nd through 6th grade, including beginners who have never played chess before as well as experienced players. A desire to learn is all that is required. Lessons are given once per week, and 14 lessons will be provided in the Spring 2012 session. Instruction will be provided by the lead teacher of the U.S. Chess Center, Chess Master Gregory Acholonu. During the semester, players will be offered various opportunities to represent Sangster Elementary School in scholastic competitions, for instance, in the Elementary Team League, the White Oaks Challenge tournament, the County Championships, and potentially even qualifying tournaments to National Scholastic Championships. Playing outside the school is optional. The Chess Club will meet in the school cafeteria on Tuesdays from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Students are expected to arrive in the cafeteria on time after school on each scheduled Tuesday. We may have more than 60 children at Chess Club and will take attendance at each meeting. Please note that Chess Club volunteers are not responsible for locating absent or late students. It is the responsibility of the parents to notify the Chess Club coordinator when their child will be absent. Parents (or authorized adults) are expected to pick up and sign out their children promptly at 5:15 p.m. It is the objective of the Chess Club to provide an enjoyable chess experience in a safe environment for all participating children. When registering your child, please consider that students are expected to play and learn chess, and required to sit and be quiet, showing respect and fairness toward the other players. Parent volunteers will be needed each Tuesday afternoon, to assist with setting up tables, distributing/removing equipment, and supervising the children (no chess knowledge required). Your help is essential as we continue to develop and enhance our Chess Club program. The membership fee for the Chess Club this session is as follows: Returning Students (enrolled in Fall 2011 Session) — $50 per child New Students (not enrolled in Fall 2011 session) — $70 for one child and $50 for each additional child in the same family. Registration: To join the Chess Club, please complete and return the registration form (back of this page) with payment (check) to your child’s home room teacher. Please make your check payable to the ‘Sangster PTA,’ with Chess Club in the memo line. The registration is valid only if a completed and signed form is received with the required payment.
