FCCPTAs – Educational Issues

Major changes and opportunities are coming – now and potentially soon – in the use of computer technology in FCPS schools. Those changes and opportunities are the
result of new developments in computer capabilities as well as in FCPS and FCC technology related programs. Some of those developments are:

  • Tablet computers
  • Smartphones
  • Digital textbooks
  • FCPS’s BYOD – Bring Your Own Devices –
    Program
  • Online Courses
  • Online Learning resources like the
    KhanAcademy.org website
  • Federal Communication Commission’s
    “Connect2Compete” Initiative
  • Virtual Mentoring

To fully take advantage of these developments, FCPS – and our children — will benefit from parents who are aware of their potential and, whenever
appropriated and possible, are engaged in helping make them of value to the students in our schools.  Consequently the FCCPTA is exploring how it
might facilitate effective use of these developments by communicating news about them and establishing, if possible, an FCPS-wide technology committee.

To help the FCCPTA do that it would be appreciated if you would forward this message to your unit’s membership and ask any interested parents contact Walt Carlson (wcarlson1@cox.net), our Technology chairman.

Thank you for your help in this effort. The FCCPTA will let you know of parents who express interest and also keep you informed with any plans that result from this effort.

Regards, Mona

FCCPTA – Media Release

FCCPTA Executive Officers Support Immediate Restoration of 5 Honors
Courses to High School Course Catalog

Letter to School Board Members Cites iPetition and Teacher Association
President

MERRIFIELD, VIRGINA – January 26,
2012 – Ramona Morrow, president of the Fairfax County Council of PTAs, issued a
letter today to the Fairfax County School Board in which she stated that the
Executive Committee (officers) of the FCCPTA “believes
that the following five Honors courses – World History 2 (10th grade), English
11 and US History (11th grade), English 12 and US Government (12th grade) -
should be offered
live starting the first day of the
2012-2013 school year.”

More than 1,600 signatures were gathered in a joint FairGrade and Restore Honors Courses in Fairfax
County (RHC)
iPetition that opened on July 1, 2011.  The FCCPTA Executive Committee believes this indicates deep and wide support for the
restoration of the five honors-level courses listed above.

Additionally, the FCCPTA Executive Committee supports the following recommendations made by Fairfax County Federation of
Teachers
 President Steve Greenburg:

  • Restore the
    ‘live’ Honors sections now
  • Consider
‘on-line’ Honors as a supplement /option for students
  • Begin forming
task-forces and focus groups of teachers, students, parents, school board
members, and FCPS administrators to examine how to revise Honors courses
to best meet the needs of all (content, process, selection, etc.)

Ms. Morrow’s letter is available by CLICKING HERE.

Fairfax County Council of PTAs (FCCPTA) cultivates meaningful partnerships among stakeholders (i.e., parents, students, school
system, and community) while serving as the primary resource for parent advocacy and involvement within Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
